Are you planning a trip? Are you taking your ferret along? Before you do, there are certain things that you must know. Traveling with a ferret is different than traveling with a cat or a dog.

First, if you are taking a car trip, your ferret will enjoy going, but he will have pent up energy that he needs to burn. Make sure that you bring along a harness and leash, and that you plan frequent stops for your ferret to stretch his legs. Make sure that you bring along a small traveling cage (you won’t want him loose in the car), food, water, and a small litter box as well.

If you are traveling by air, note that not all airlines will transport a ferret, and your pet ferret may not be welcomed in all countries. In fact, even in the United States, there are laws against the possession of ferrets in some cities - even if you are just visiting. Make sure that you call the game and fish department of your destination city to be sure that your ferret is welcome.

Next, call the airline. Make sure that your ferret can travel on that airline, and inquire about anything that you may need to do to get your pet accepted for transport. If you are going to another country, make sure that you are aware of the laws regarding ferrets, and the laws regarding the admittance of any pet into the country.

As of this writing, pets are allowed in the cargo area of Luxair, Northwest Airlines, and Air Canada. They are allowed in the cabin on Delta Airlines. Ferrets are not welcome on Ryanair, Southwest Airlines, or US Airways.

Regarding import laws, your ferret will not be allowed to enter Australia or Japan. A ferret may be brought into Canada, as long as it is originating from the United States. Otherwise, a Permit to Import is required from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Ferrets are also allowed in Europe.

In the United States, ferrets are not allowed in Hawaii or California. Pets are not allowed in the cities of Washington D.C or New York City either. There are many other smaller cities that have ordinances against ferrets, and again, you should call ahead to find out what the law is before you travel with your ferret.

If you cannot bring your ferret along, you can contact your veterinarian about finding a kennel for your ferret while you are gone. Note, however, that any separation from you will upset your ferret, making him feel abandoned. Take him with you if it is possible and if not, put him in his cage, and ask a trusted friend to come by daily to check on him or ask them to stay at your house and ferret-sit. At least in this way, the ferret will remain in familiar surroundings, which is a great deal less stressful to him.

When traveling with your ferret, make sure that you inquire about the size of the carrier needed (for airlines), and carry your ferrets vaccination records with you, as well as medical records for any conditions that he might have, in case he needs emergency care.

Just a couple of weeks, my wife casually mentioned to me that we have not gone for a vacation for quite some time. Reflecting back, I started feeling guilty as I have promised her a vacation every year ever since we got married. However, family commitments and the demands of our jobs have kept us so busy that I was not able to fulfill my promise to her for the last few years.

We started discussing on the various countries that we would like to go to. I have always want to go to England to visit my favorite soccer club but it seems my wife seem to have other ideas. She was looking for something more exotic and eastern, we shortlist our vacation destination to three countries, namely Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

We then start visiting sites and forums on travelling to get feedbacks and ideas from fellow travelers. One of the few sites that we useful for information on our travel destination are Wikipedia and Travel Channel and as for booking of air tickets Zuji is the site to go to.

I’m actually surprised that I can find a wealth of information on travel locations over at Wikipedia. In the past, I always viewed Wikipedia as some sort of online encyclopedia on general stuff, not the sort of useful and user edited information. Now, I see Wikipedia in a different light as compared in the past.

Another site worthy of mentioned is HotelsCombined. Over at HotelsCombined, I can compare and find the best the rates of different hotels from over 30 sites at once. HotelsCombined is incredibly time saving for people like me who cannot afford the time to check out 30 over sites for the best hotel rates.

And just yesterday, my wife told me she has decided on Hong Kong and she is now pulling ahead with the planning and preparation for the trip. Guess I just have to sit back and enjoy the vacation. But before that, what I need to do is just to find someone to look after my pet fishes and dog when we are enjoying ourselves over at Hong Kong in about a month’s time.

Many people overlook that dinosaurs were reptiles, as are tortoises and turtles. Frogs are often lumped into the same category while they are, in fact, amphibians.

Reptiles evolved from amphibians because of their necessity to learn to adjust to life on land. This brought about the need for legs and lungs to breathe air. Yet snakes are legless, able to crawl along with their magnificent bodies. The scaly reptile skin was necessary to protect the bodies from the rough surface of the ground, much different from the smooth water the amphibians were used to.

Science has described over 7,000 species of reptiles, even going so far as to claim birds as a part of the reptile group because of the inherited characteristics such as their skeletons, internal organs, and DNA. There is a distinction besides feathers, though. Birds are endotherms, meaning they must have food for energy to keep warm. Other reptiles are ecotherms which need an outside heat source to help them retain proper body temperature.

Crocodiles are in the second oldest group of reptiles, perhaps resembling the dinosaur relatives more than any other reptile group. Although, the turtle is the winner of the oldest proven reptile group, even older than the dinosaurs!

There are two groups of turtles, one group fares best on land and the other in water. The one that fares best on land is the terrestrial tortoise.

Success in keeping a reptile for a pet depends much on your climate. You can forget sticking your pet snake, turtle, or lizard outside in a cage or pen or aquarium if you live in a cold climate. Keeping the pet in a controlled temperature is essential to its survival. Digestion depends on the right temperature and so does the animal’s ability to move around successfully.

It may seem cute to see that little turtle basking in the sun on a log in a pond. But the reptile needs the heat to stay alive. Too much heat is also as bad as too little.

Maybe the turtle’s ability to live for so many centuries when other animals perished is because of its outstanding life span. A turtle can live to 100 years old if the conditions are right!

Old temples have been discovered in Africa with snakes carved into the walls, giving pythons a sacred quality over the many years of its existence. But the boas have been known to live over forty years at a time in zoos! Anacondas have been feared in South America for a long time. Any snake that can grow to over 35 feet deserves a wide berth!

An interesting reptile that’s been around a long time is a native of Madagascar. The chameleon exists in 120 different known types. Oustalet’s chameleon is about the size of a small cat. It would give a domestic feline a definite scare to walk upon one of those! On the other end of the size spectrum, the Dwarf Brookesia, also a native of Madagascar, is small enough to stand on the tip of a finger.

If you are considering getting a ferret, you should be aware of diseases and conditions that are common to ferrets. Don’t think of a ferret as a diseased animal - they aren’t. However, they do get illnesses that may shorten their lives.

The first thing a ferret owner should be aware of is intestinal obstructions. This is not a disease, but a condition caused by your ferret swallowing something that cannot be digested. Like small children, anything a ferret gets a hold of goes directly to their mouth and they may swallow it.

Intestinal obstruction is the number one cause of deaths among ferrets. Unfortunately, it is a slow and painful death for the ferret if you don’t realize that there is a problem and seek treatment from the vet. Items that the ferret may want to chew are also a danger, because small pieces can come off and be swallowed. Ferrets are especially fond of rubber items, like sink stoppers. A ferret is most likely suffering from intestinal obstruction if he is lethargic, vomiting, has problems having a bowel movement, or refuses to eat or drink. He can die very quickly from this.

Lymphoma is also a common disease that ferrets may experience. Lymphoma is cancer, and is indicated by diarrhea, weight loss, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes. In most cases, your vet can help you to make your ferret more comfortable. He may even try radiation therapy, which is expensive but there is no real cure for lymphoma.

If your ferret passes bright green feces, he most likely has ECE or Epizootic Catarrhal Enteritis. This is highly contagious, and known as the Green Slime Disease. The ferret may vomit as well, and is at high risk for dehydration, malnutrition, and ulcers. He may also have seizures. At the first sign of green, slimy feces, you should contact your vet for treatment.

You may have a diabetic ferret on your hand. Insulinomas are growths on the pancreas. They cause the pancreas to release too much insulin, which in turn makes your ferret suffer from hypoglycemia. If your ferret is weak, lethargic, or sleeps too much, call the vet. Serious symptoms include vomiting, disorientation, and seizures, among others.

Adrenal disease is also common among ferrets. Adrenal disease means that there are growths on the adrenal gland, which may or may not be cancerous. Common symptoms of adrenal disease include hair loss, starting just above the tail and moving up the back. The ferret may also experience weight loss. If the ferret is a female, the vulvae may be swollen as well. A ferret usually won’t suffer from adrenal disease until he or she is between three and four years of age.

The good news is that you don’t have to diagnose your ferret. All you have to do is pay attention. Anytime there is a change in eating habits, sleeping habits, play habits, or bathroom habits, call the vet and get the ferret checked for a potential problem.

Many people who are not knowledgeable about the breed simply cannot tell one Yorkshire Terrier apart from another Yorkshire Terrier of the same age and size, with the same haircut. Although Yorkshire Terrier lovers around the world can easily tell the difference between two seemingly identical dogs, owners do enjoy dressing their Yorkshire Terriers up a bit.

Most Yorkshire Terrier owners do a topknot on top of the Yorkies head, and put a bow on it. This is acceptable for male and female Yorkshire Terriers, and it helps to hold their long hair up out of their face, and out of their food. Therefore, it has a utility purpose other than just looking cute. You should have a variety of hair bows for your Yorkie, and put a fresh bow on his topknot, or just above both of his ears, each day.

It is not uncommon for male dogs to wear bandanas around their necks. Make sure that your Yorkies bandana is not so tight that it is uncomfortable or dangerous for him, and not so loose that it will hinder his movements. You can buy human bandanas for this, or bandanas designed especially for dogs in a variety of colors and patterns.

Smaller dogs get cold easier and have a harder time warming up. Therefore, for winter weather, you should definitely have a wide selection of sweaters for your Yorkshire Terrier to wear around the house. Even if he doesn’t like them, put a sweater on him when you take him outdoors in the winter time.

Some Yorkshire Terriers have need of stockings for their hind legs. This is because Yorkies are prone to skin irritations, which they only make worse when they scratch. If this is the case, you can use human socks, or you can purchase a variety of stockings designed for small dogs from pet stores or online sources.

Many owners really dress their female Yorkshire Terriers to the nines. They purchase dresses and even top and skirt combinations with matching hair bows. If you do want to dress your Yorkshire Terrier up, make sure that you are not causing the dog any discomfort. Not all clothing is comfortable for these dogs. Make sure that nothing is too tight or too loose, and that nothing is hindering his movements or daily activities.

Finally, wash your Yorkshire Terriers clothes often. Do not use laundry soap that you use for your own clothes. Instead, select laundry detergent that is designed for baby clothes, as this type of detergent has fewer perfumes and such that can irritate your Yorkshire Terriers skin.

One final tip - if you start dressing your Yorkshire Terrier when he is a baby, he will actually come to like his clothing. In fact, he will miss it when it isn’t there, and may actually ‘request’ that you dress him.

Did you think a frog is a reptile? Maybe it would help to learn the difference in reptiles and amphibians. Amphibians can’t travel far from a water source because their skin would dry out. Their eggs wouldn’t survive either since they must be laid in water. Reptiles, on the other hand, already have tough hard scaly skin.

Snakes are well-known and feared reptiles. Many people simply misunderstand the snake. It’s a benefit to the balance of nature. They consume rodents, amphibians, and insects as well as providing a source of food to other animals. They’re valuable additions to our animal world because of the importance as predators and as prey.

Many people kill snakes without knowing whether or not they are dangerous. Some snakes are “good” snakes in the way that they kill the bad snakes. Those annoying mice are controlled because of the snake population, too. But before you decide that you’d rather have a bigger mouse population than snakes, you would surely agree that everything was created for a reason. Just because you may be scared of something does not mean it is less important to our world.

Have you ever struck out in fear, by instinct or reflex? Sometimes a reptile is forced to do the same thing in order to survive. It doesn’t stop to think first because the time could cost it a life. Snakes do not strike out because they hate humans, lizards do not bite because they are holding a grudge, snapping turtles do not snap because they don’t like the blouse you decided to wear today. A reptile attacks because it feels threatened or because it is hungry.

If you live in an area where the venomous snake population is higher than normal or maybe your chance of coming into contact with such is higher, you may want to purchase a Sawyer Pump Extractor. This handy little machine suctions out the venom from the bite, reducing your chances of more serious illness or death.

There are some helpful do’s and don’ts to know once you’ve been bit. Of course, you should get away from the snake first. Although it is scary, you will less affected if you can make yourself stay as calm as possible. Remove jewelry that may become binding should your arm or hand swell from a bite. Wrap a wide band of material or elastic bandage above the bite area and leave in place until proper medical help is achieved. Do not wrap this too tightly. Alert an emergency center of your upcoming visit if possible.

Don’t take any alcohol or drugs as this may interfere with your treatment once you arrive at the medical center. It could also inhibit your ability to get there if you are forced to drive yourself. Applying ice or electric shock of any kind is not advised.

It will help to pay attention to the reptile that bit you so that you can relate the information to the medical personnel when you get help. It may help them identify your needs quicker.

You wouldn’t think that such small dogs had such special dietary needs, but Yorkshire Terriers really do have special nutritional needs, and they are indeed very picky eaters.

Most Yorkshire Terrier owners do not purchase commercial dog food for their beloved pets. Instead, these special dogs are fed the same foods that people eat. Favorite foods include chicken and beef, as well as a variety of green vegetables, milk, and bread. All foods should be free of preservatives, organic if possible, and all meats should be thoroughly cooked.

You should ask your veterinarian how much your Yorkshire Terrier should eat, and how often. If a Yorkshire puppy goes too long without eating, he has a very high chance of suffering from Hypoglycemia. Ideally, your Yorkshire Terrier will be fed three times a day, with a snack in the evening.

Your veterinarian may inquire as to exactly what you are feeding your Yorkie, so that he can determine which supplements your dog may need. No supplements of vitamin C should be given to a Yorkshire Terrier, and you do not need to feed him foods rich in vitamin C either. For the most part, you should try to provide all of the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that your Yorkshire Terrier needs through the food that he eats.

Cooking for your Yorkshire Terrier is not time consuming. Most Yorkie owners prepare food for the week within a couple of hours, and then store that food in the refrigerator. You can heat the food in the microwave or on the stove ?or simply allow the portion he is about to eat to come to room temperature before serving it to him.

Water, of course, is essential. While you do not want to make food freely available to your Yorkshire Terrier, you absolutely must provide a steady supply of fresh water. Your Yorkie will be very energetic, and can easily become dehydrated if fresh water is not continually available.

The best food dishes will be made of durable plastic or glass. Do not use crockery type bowls, as bacteria from food can seep into the pores, and eventually make your dog ill. Wash his water bowl once a day, and wash his food bowl after each meal. Make sure that you rinse the dishes well, so that no soap residue remains.

Be prepared for the pickiness, and make sure that you pay attention to what your dog is and is not eating. If a Yorkie doesn’t like some of the food in his bowl, he will push that food to the side, and eat the foods that he likes around it. Again, pay attention to what he isn’t eating, so that you can exchange that particular food with one that is equal in terms of vitamins and minerals.

Today, guinea pigs are popular pets, and it is easy to find information concerning their care. Unfortunately, there is not a great deal of information concerning health concerns that are common to guinea pigs. For this reason, many people don’t realize that there actually are health concerns that they need to be aware of.

Guinea pigs commonly suffer from diarrhea, abscesses, scurvy, and respiratory infections. Female guinea pigs may develop ovarian cysts, if they have not been spayed. Some bedding can cause a corneal ulcer in the eye, and pneumonia is also a risk. Guinea pigs are also subject to genetic diseases, including congenital eye disorders and digestive problems, as well as waltzing disease, palsy, and tremors.

Some health problems require the services of a veterinarian, but many can be treated at home. Some health problems can be avoided completely. For example, scurvy can be avoided by making sure that your guinea pig has an adequate amount of vitamin C on a daily basis. Many infections and abscesses can be avoided by making sure that your guinea pig remains free of parasites, including lice, mites, and fungus. Ovarian cysts can be avoided by spaying your female guinea pig.

Corneal ulcers are indicated when the guinea pig blinks more than usual, and his eyes run. You may also notice an opaque film over his eyes. This is usually caused by a small foreign object in the eye, such as a small piece of straw or hay. For this, the eye simply needs to be washed out, so that the foreign object is removed.

If your guinea pig is sneezing a great deal, he probably needs to see a veterinarian, as a cold can quickly turn to pneumonia. There may come a point when you need to take your guinea pigs temperature. For this, an ear thermometer is recommended, although if you don’t have one, a rectal thermometer must be used. Normal temperature for a guinea pig is between 101 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. If your guinea pig is running fever, he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

The biggest concern you have is the fact that as a prey animal, your guinea pig will work hard at hiding pain and other signs of illness. This is his natural instinct, and it means that you must be absolutely diligent in keeping your eyes open for potential health problems. The best thing that you can do for your guinea pig is to have him examined by a veterinarian that treats guinea pigs twice each year. This will help to catch any serious health problems early, which will often result in successful treatment.

When you bring the new puppy home, the first thing you will want to do is feed him. What kind of food do you use? What are his nutritional requirements? Will he like what you give him? Make sure your vet is involved in his diet planning.

Make sure the dog’s food is healthy and tasty. Try to find something for the stage of life he is in. For example, if he is a puppy, buy him puppy food. Decide on what you are going to feed him before you bring him home. This prevents last minute decisions that might not be healthy for your pet.
Dry food is quite popular. It is easy to store and usually tastes great. It is also good for helping keep the teeth clean.

Soft and moist food are great for your dog to eat because he will eat most of the food and get the added nutrition.

Canned food have the highest water content. These also contain less nutrition, so you may need to feed your dog more than usual to equal out the nutrition they may need.

Look at the levels of vitamins and crude materials on the label. Is there enough fat, protein, calories and other nutrients? Is the food tasty and is the price too expensive? These are things to consider when buying puppy food.

If your dog becomes finicky and will only eat certain things, this is sometimes due to change in diet. Allow the dog time to adjust. If he still won’t eat, try a new food. If he still doesn’t cooperate, you may need to take him to the vet for a checkup to make sure nothing is wrong.

Some people feed their dogs from the table. This is like in between meal snacking and kills th dog’s appetite for when it is time for him to eat his food. Avoid feeding the dog off the table.
